The October meeting was very enjoyable. Thanks to those who came and a special thanks to those who brought goodies to eat and gifts for door prizes. We ask everyone to bring something to the next meeting. If you want to make a special dish or dessert, or wrap something as a Christmas present/door prize, please do so in the spirit of Santa Claus. But please come, even if you forgot to make something. There will be plenty for all.
It will be the last day of the book sale, so, if you have been putting off getting that book you’ve been wanting and no one gave it to you for your birthday, make it a Christmas gift to yourself!

Dues, payable NOW, are as follows: Individual, $25, Family $30 (two adults in one household), Contributing $30, Life $250, and Libraries pay $22 per year. Nelson Marcel brought some of his World War II picture collection to the October meeting, and told some war stories. Lionel Bourdier had a picture of a church in Donaldsonville that had been closed because of some trouble between the pastor and his parishioners.
Dorotha Horvath thanked all Terrebonne Parish residents for voting in the 30 mil tax for library maintenance. Everyone agreed that the amount generated by the tax was barely enough to keep the library system going. She read a letter from Hugh Nini in Texas who was looking for anyone who had Nini in their family tree. Please contact Dorotha (c/o the Society) if you know of anyone by that name. Dorotha reported that member Dottie Thiesen had sent two books, about 57 pages of Babin descendants of Antoine and Marie Mercier. This material can now be found in the vertical file. We need a small student desk to be used by Dorotha in the North Branch Genealogy Collection. It has to be small to fit the available space. For questions, contact Dorotha.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The security system that the Society had bought and installed in the Main Branch Library cannot be moved. Right now, the genealogy books in the North Branch are without security. The Friends of the Library have donated $3000 toward the $7000 cost of a new system. We figure that if each of the 460 members of the Society would take responsibility for raising just $10, we could get a new system. You don’t have to come up with the whole amount. Talk to your family or friends, businesses that you have dealings with, or whatever. At the meeting, Wade Usé suggested that one could put aside $1.00 a month for 10 months, or $5.00 now and $5.00 later. You may send your contributions to Nancy and ask her to dedicate it to the Security System, and let her know if you plan to use the amount on your tax return as a deductible contribution. WE ARE A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION.
The Election Committee for next year’s elections has been appointed. The members are: Dorothy Bergeron, Marcie Cavalier, Gloria Hicks, Dorotha Horvath, and Wade Usé. Good luck, y’all.
Member Jackie Thibodeaux and her husband, Michael, have a brand new grandbaby. Peyton Michael was born November 18, 1997, at St. Anne Hospital in Raceland. He weighed 7 lbs. 12.4 oz. And was 20 ¾ inches long. His parents are Mike, Jr., and Shantel Guidry Thibodeaux. Congratulations to parents and grandparents!
Catherine Louise Smith Fortenberry died 5 November 1997 at 48 years of age. Burial was in Chattanooga, TN. She was the wife of Darryl Fortenberry, and daughter of Harmon Loy and Velma Brien Smith (both deceased). She is survived by 2 children and 2 grandchildren, brothers Loy Andrew Smith, Henry Edward Smith, sisters Mrs. Lawrence (Edith) Fanguy, Mrs. Robert (Betty Ruth) Odom, Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Hebert. She was the niece of longtime member Larue Smith LeBlanc.
A corporation has been formed to sponsor a Gravois Family Reunion to be held in Vacherie, Louisiana, August 7 & 8, 1999, in conjunction with the Congrès Mondial Acadien (CMA). Officers are: President - Ronald J. Gravois; Vice-President - Roland A. Gravois; Sec.-Treas. - François D. Gravois, Jr.; Directors - Gloria Gravois Hicks, and Earl S. Gravois, with 2 more directorships open; Attorney - Richard Brazon, Jr. An activity planning meeting will be held at the Community Center of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Vacherie, Louisiana, on Saturday, January 10, 1998. It is hoped that many interested in helping out on the days of this reunion will come to this meetingwith ideas about what can be done to entice Gravois descendants from all over the world to gather in Vacherie in 1999!
December 13, the day of our Christmas Social at the North Branch Library in Gray, will be the last day of our inventory reducing 20%-off book sale. Many have already taken advantage of the sale to add to their personal collections, but if you have been procrastinating, it is time to act. Remember, no other discounts apply, and if you are ordering by mail, please add $3.00 for the first book, and $0.50 for each additional book. (An exception is the 775-page Houma Newspaper Deaths, No. 29, which costs $3.50 to mail.) Please allow time for mail delivery, especially during this holiday season. Your order should reach us BEFORE December 13 to be eligible for the discount.
