Next meeting:

Saturday, August 25, 2007
Main Branch Library, Houma, LA                                                                                                                1:00 p.m.

Did you go to the Lafourche Heritage Society Seminar on Saturday, August 11, 2007? Well, if you did not then you missed a really impressive Seminar. There were speakers from the Canary Islanders, with a fabulous display of the Canary Islands; Woody Falgoux, who wrote a book about the boat business, called The Rise of the Cajun Mariner: The race for the big oil. Albert Robichaux Jr. had some good tips on research in France along with some websites. We will get a list of these websites for you to research, which may save you a trip to France. France is starting to put a lot of their records on the web. And last but not least Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick talked about Forensic Genealogy, which included DNA research. She autographed books for those of us who purchased her books. Lunch was delectable. There were vendors from Bayou Lafourche Folklife & Heritage Museum, West Baton Rouge Genealogical Society, and TGS. We wish we had the space to give you all the details, but there are too many to mention in this newsletter, you would have had to have been there.

We would like to extend our apology to the Bluebonnet Genealogy Dept. in Baton Rouge. But we did not receive your invitation to your conference in time to print in our newsletter. Their conference was Aug. 11, 2007 at the Bluebonnet Regional Library in Baton Rouge. We missed some wonderful speaker such as, Emily Croom, a local author, Charlotte Hudson Ewing, Bill Stafford from the state archives, and a representative from the Creole Center in Nachitoches. Sorry we missed your conference.

We have invited Kevin Allemand, director of the Historical Research Center of the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church to speak to us at the August meeting to explain his role as Archivist and the research center’s holdings and policies. It should be an interesting talk. Don’t miss it.
