We all enjoyed seeing members who had been absent from our meetings, but not from our hearts and minds. Thanks to those who brought goodies for the snack table and gifts for our door prizes. It was the last day of our fabulous book sale, and many attended to take advantage of the sale, as well as to partake of the good spirits which were in abundance that December morning. There are still some who have trouble getting used to the morning meetings, but we’re learning!

Speaking of the sale, it was a tremendous success. Everyone is happy about it. Our members are happy that they got some bargains, and Nancy is happy because it brought us financially into the black. Jess is happy that we have more room to store the new books that will be coming out soon. The only ones that may not be happy are those who missed the sale. Sorry, buddies, maybe next time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope the year 1998 will bring you all the success and happiness that you so truly deserve. Which reminds me. Don’t forget to send your dues! (See notice below.) We get such nice notes with the checks for membership dues. Like the one we received from Wayne Oncale, Rockford, Illinois, wishing us a successful new year, and the one from Emma Gene (Mrs. Herbert) Gentry, Austin, Texas, thanking all the volunteers for the fine work they have been doing for the Terrebonne Genealogical Society. It would be a shame if you were like some who realized a year later that they had let their membership lapse. Don’t let it get that far. If you fail to receive the April newsletter, you DID forget.

We have been getting donations toward the new security system which is to be installed at North Branch to protect the Genealogy collection there. Just something to let us know you are concerned.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Lifetime member Wilma Boudreaux called with news of her granddaughter who is at Nicholls State University majoring in nursing. Johnna Detillier Le achieved a 4.0 Grade Point Average for this semester, giving her a 3.87 GPA overall! That’s fantastic! Johnna is the daughter of John and Evelyn Boudreaux Detillier.

Besides that, Wilma informed us of the birth on December 13, 1997, of her twelfth great-grandchild, Rebecca Lynn Moore, the daughter of Olan and Donna Boudreaux Moore of Houma.

GET WELL SOON

Several of our members have been "under the weather" lately, but I don’t think we can blame El Niño. Wilma Boudreaux was treated in the hospital for asthmatic bronchitis and sent home to recuperate for six days at home, not even going to Bingo. It seems the condition was brought on by secondhand smoke, and if you have ever been to a Bingo hall, you know what a hazard that is.

Lifetime member Leola Cinquemani was involved in an automobile accident recently, and is recuperating at her niece’s home in Mathews, Louisiana. Take care, Leola.

Dorotha Horvath is in the hospital, leaving the Genealogy Collection at the North Branch without a guide. Dorotha spent at least one day a week helping out. If you would like to be her relief, contact Nancy Wright at 868-0370. We miss you, Dorotha.

Several others that need our prayers are Bennie Naquin Hardberger, Dot Naquin and Ruth Bergeron.

DEATHS

We regret to report the death of charter member Marion Babin Martinez, a native of Houma and resident of Thibodaux, who died Saturday, December 13, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel, her parents, Wilsie J. and Lucille Cecile Duet Babin, and one brother, Carroll J. Babin. She is survived by two sons, Craig and Kerry Martinez, one daughter, Patti M. Martinez, one sister, Betty Perry, and three grandchildren.

Board member Louis Duet lost his uncle, Sterling J. Stevens on Monday, December 22, 1997. Husband of the late Frances Borne Stevens, father of Gayle S. Benoit, Christine S. Ricouard, Sterling J. Jr., Mark J. Sr., and Chet D. Stevens. Brother of the late Raymond Stevens and Marguerite S. Duet, he was theson of the late Irby Stevens and Josephine Scarpula. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Our sympathies are with the Martinez and Stevens families.

SEND IN YOUR DUES

If you want to continue to receive your quarterly, you must send in your dues soon. Individual dues are $25.00 per year, Family dues are $30.00 per year (two adults in one household). Contributing dues are $30.00 per year, and life membership is $250.00. Library dues are $22.00 per year. Besides the four issues of Terrebonne Life Lines (which is worth the yearly dues by itself), you receive the monthly newsletter with notices of upcoming events, AND you are eligible for a year-round discount on the price of our books ($1 on each full $10 cost of books for paid membership).

There will be an informational meeting for Daigle Family descendants for the CMA reunion in August, 1999. To celebrate their 150th anniversary St. Francis de Sales Church in Houma has produced a beautiful booklet with history and pictures,available at the church.

Make plans now to attend the AGLL/Heritage Quest Road Show sponsored by The Southwest Louisiana Genealogical Society, Inc. It will be held on Saturday, March 14, 1998, at the Calcasieu Health Unit Auditorium in Lake Charles, LA. The fee of $25.00 per person, $10.00 for additional family member does not include lunch. Topics include Finding the Women in Your Pedigree, Using Tax Records to Establish Relationships, and Organization, Filing & Numbering Systems in the 90s.
