Next meeting:   SATURDAY, 1:00 P.M., MAY 30, 2009
MAIN BRANCH LIBRARY, 151 LIBRARY DRIVE,  HOUMA, LA 70360

THE MAY MEETING WILL BE UPSTAIRS IN THE GENEALOGY ROOM. We hope you will join us there. The last time we had to have our meeting upstairs was in October 2008 and we had a very informative meeting. We hope this meeting will be the same. It’s wonderful to have a meeting surrounded by a vast number of genealogy books within arms reach.

How do you like oral history stories? As you may have notice our quarterly has been publishing some of the oral history tapes from the library. We were fortunate enough to hear a tiny piece of one of the tapes that President Phil Chauvin, Jr. played at our last meeting. Just think about it, the voice of possibly one of your ancestors. To hear some of the things they did, how they lived and how they played. There is a list of all the tapes at the library and we also put one in our Fall 2008 quarterly. What a treasure to pass down from one generation to the next. Think about doing an oral history tape of one of your living elders, before it is to late.

KUDOS

The Society received a beautiful letter and certificate of appreciation from Darryl H. Eschete, MLIS of the Terrebonne Parish Library. He expressed his thanks at the work done in digitizing and transcribing their oral history tapes. He states that to pay someone to do the work would entail a grant too large to mention and immense help to this library and his department.  KUDOS to Ed Hicks and all volunteers who are transcribing such as Phil Chauvin, Jr. and Blanche Brown and all others.
