There's a lot of genealogizing going on, folks. And if you don't believe it, come to one of our meetings. Take the one on August 29th, for instance. Several guests were there and they seemed to be making connections right and left. It was fun! Ed & Emily Quin were not at the meeting, but they sent a big "Hello" from the road to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. All present say "Hello, back, y'all." Nelson Marcel brought two bayonets from World War I. He estimates that they were made in 1906 or 1907. Bennie Hardberger announced that many colleges and universities are offering free computer classes for senior citizens (over 65), but no one there was old enough. Most said if they saw any seniors they would let them know (little joke). Did you know that Houma boasted of a real live hermit at one time? Some strange tales were told about him, including the one claiming he was responsible for tearing down a church that was under construction. Seems he had donated the land for the church, and he didn't like the fact that the church members were giving a dance to raise money. His father, Jean Pierre Dugas, had received a land grant of four or five hundred acres. It's history, folks, not rumor. Jess told about the Civil War Research Center at 501 Federal in Morgan City. This museum and Research Center is offering a bus tour which will cover the battlefields of the 1863 Teche Campaign and the 1864 Red River Campaign. It will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, visiting battlefields at Nerson's Woods, Bayou Bourbeau, Fort DeRussy and Yellow Bayou on the first day and stay overnight in Alexandria. On Sunday, the tour will continue with tours of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. Starting place is the Best Western Forest Motor Inn in Franklin, and registration is $100 per person and covers the tour, meals and hotel room (double occupancy). Patty Gravois is interested in Vigilante and Anti-Vigilante groups (especially around St. Landry and St. Martin parishes) at about the time of the Civil War.
Gloria and Ed Hicks are pleased to announce the birth of their grandson, Mason Gregory Hicks. He is the son of Paul Frederick Hicks and Loralie Dawn Houston of Fredericksburg, VA. Maternal grandparents are Lorna and Clyde Houston of Winchester, VA.
Condolences go out to member Cecilia L. Richard, who lost her brother, Donald J. Leonard on August 22, 1998. He was a native and resident of Thibodaux, LA, and was the brother of Herman and Gerard Leonard, Mrs. Eugene (Lorraine) Folse, Mrs. Gilbert (Miriam) Esteve, Sister Bertha Leonard, Sister Lucie Leonard and Sister Anne Leonard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elvain and Bertha Gaubert Leonard; and brother Francis Leonard.

If this reaches you in time, you may want to attend the Gravois Family Picnic and General Membership Meeting of La Famille Gravois. It will be held on Sunday, September 27, 1998, at Veterans Memorial Park, 1800 Williams Blvd, Kenner, LA. Shelters 3, 4 & 5 have been reserved, but the number of picnic tables is limited. You may be wise to bring tables and chairs. Sand volleyball courts are available, but you must provide volleyballs. Correspondence between Capt. Florian G. Cornay and his wife Adele Haydel Cornay is being prepared for publication. Pat Henican, 1017 St. Louis St., New Orleans, LA 70116, is seeking any Cornay-Haydel memorabilia (photographs, letters, etc.) That might be included in the text and accompanying exhibit. If you live near enough to Houston to drive over, the Houston Genealogical Forum is holding its Fall Seminar on Saturday, October 24, 1998, at the ScottishRite Temple, 2900 N. Braeswood, Houston. The featured speaker is Mary McCampbell Bell, noted researcher, instructor, and national lecturer. Pre-registration will be held until Oct. 5, and $27.00 gets you registered with lunch. "Power and Protest: Dissent and Reaction in the Gulf South, 1850-1970" is the theme of the Seventeenth Gulf South History and Humanities Conference to be held in Hammond, LA, from October 8 through October 10, 1998, at the Holiday Inn. Keynote speaker will be Dr. John Boles, managing editor of The Journal of Southern History and the William P. Hobby Professor of History at Rice University. Curious about the Melungeons? The 18th Annual Conference of the Founders of Natchitoches, Inc. may help you sort out the facts from the fiction. The author of The Spanish Pioneers in United States History, THE MELUNGEONS: The Pioneers in the Interior Southeastern United States, 1526-1997 will be one of the featured speakers.
