We were treated to a lively, double-barreled presentation by Audrey Babineaux George. She gave a little of the history and what to expect of the Congrès Mondial Acadian in the first two weeks of August, this year, AND she let us know that it doesn't take that much to entertain foreign visitors with a Bed-and-Breakfast setup. In fact, it sounded like fun. No one was napping, I guarantee you, to quote Justin Wilson. Next, Lucretia Dietrich McBride told us of the plans to hold a candlelight service for the re-interment of the persons whose tomb was rebuilt in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Thibodaux. It will be held in conjunction with CMA, on Monday, August 2, 1999, in said cemetery. Be on the lookout for the time to be announced.
Due to the death of his father April 15, Aubrey LeBlanc will have to
postpone the hands-on computer demonstration he had planned for our April
meeting. More information will follow in the next newsletter.
DEATHS
Our sympathies go out to our long-time member, Ethel Repp Blanchard of Addis, LA. Ethel lost her husband, John Harry Blanchard in February of this year. Owner of Harry's 1-Stop in Addis, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Michael Harry and Wanda Whittington Blanchard and John Wayne and Martha Gallagher Blanchard, all of Plaquemine; a sister, Lillia Mae Rivet, Plaquemine; four brothers, Milton Ellis, John Calvin and James Thomas Blanchard, all of Plaquemine, and Gerald Joseph Blanchard, Ferriday; a daughter-in-law, Zella Varnell Blanchard, Addis; mother-in-lawEdna Sedotal Repp, Plaquemine; and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Anthony Blanchard; parents, Ellis Ivan and Lily Alice Seymour Blanchard; father-in-law John Repp; and a brother-in-law, Gerald Joseph Repp. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 167 of Plaquemine, member and past president of VFW of Addis and a member of Associated Grocers, Inc.
We sympathize, too, with Linda Vega of Cut Off, LA, member since 1982.
She lost her father, Leo W. Lapeyrouse, 88, a native and resident of Chauvin,
LA. He is survived by two sons, Stephen J. And MarkW. Lapeyrouse; two daughters
besides Linda: June Marie Trosclair and Claudette M. Lirette; two brothers,
Dewey and Andrew Lapeyrouse; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Picou Lapeyrouse; his parents,
Octave and Emma Fanguy Lapeyrouse; one son, Leland Lapeyrouse; four brothers,
Louis, Camille, William and Octave Lapeyrouse Jr.; two sisters, Emma Bosbien
and Lillian Lapeyrouse; and one grandson, Brien D. Trosclair. He was a
retired fisherman and active in the care of the Knights of Columbus Hall
in Chauvin for more than 27 years. He was a wood carver, pirogue builder
and an active participant of Downtown on the Bayou. Linda remembers the
stories he used to tell of the family and his excellent memory of names.
He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, past grand knight
of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5013 and an usher and parishioner
of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
BOOKS
How many genealogy researchers use the Soundex of a census? Plenty,
I'll bet. And, if our family of interest is not in the Soundex, we scratch
our heads and wonder a minute and go on to the next census year. At the
Board meeting last week we were discussing our latest book the Lafourche
Parish LA 1880 Census, and Audrey Westerman came up with a little-known
fact: If a family had no children under 10, they were not included in
the 1880 Soundex records. That is what makes this book so valuable.
You will find families in the Census itself that were not included in the
Soundex. Check it out. Those of you with roots in Terrebonne Parish
in 1880, watch this space for an important announcement. That's all I'm
allowed to say.
OLD ACADIAN CEMETERY
In 1996 the cemetery of Holy Family Church Parish of Pisiquid (La Paroisse de la Sainte-Famille de Pisiquid) in Nova Scotia was discovered on a lot scheduled for residential development. At that time, the newly-formed Committee for the Preservation of the Sainte-Famille Cemetery borrowed money and purchased the lot in question. The committee also plans to develop the site into a monument or memorial dedicated to the Acadians. The committee is urging Acadian descendants interested in the preservation of this important site to take part in this project. Donations to the Committee for the Preservation of the Sainte-Famille Cemetery are tax deductible and income taxreceipts will be issued to the contributors.
Sales of the "Acadie Coverlet" will also raise money for this effort. This is a 50-by-70 inch, 100% cotton, two-layer colorfast and machine washable coverlet. The cost of the coverlet is $55.75 U.S. currency. This amount covers shipping and handling. Payment for the coverlet and/or donations to the committee should be made by check or money order payable to Sainte-Famille•Couverture de l'Acadie or to the Committee for the Preservation of the Sainte-Famille Cemetery. The Committee for the Preservation of the Sainte-Famille Cemetery is
also compiling a list of the Acadians who are probably buried there. If
you have records about your Acadian ancestor or ancestors who lived in
Pisiquid, or were deported from there, especially in La Paroisse de la
Sainte-Famille de Pisiquid, please send the list of names, dates of birth,
dates of death, etc., to the address above. For questions, you may contact

ROGERS/ROGER/CAISSIE REUNION
In conjunction with Congrès Mondial Acadien-Louisiane 1999, the
association of La Famille Rogers/Roger/Caissie is organizing to conduct
their family's reunion and celebration. They have scheduled a meeting for
Saturday, April 24, 1999, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the West Bank Regional
Library, Room "B," 2751 Manhattan Blvd. If the name is in your family lineage,
you are invited and encouraged to attend!!
LAND INSTITUTE
More and more genealogists are discovering the value of learning the skills necessary to place their ancestor's property on a USGS topo map! The "Land, Land, and More Land" Institute presented by the Dallas Genealogical Society in cooperation with the Dallas Public Library, 1515 Young St., Dallas, TX, is designed to acquaint you with the rudimentary skills needed to understand how to read deeds and plat them out. Cost of the Institute is $200 which covers the land platting kit and handouts, lunch Friday and Saturday, brunch Sunday and evening classes/research time. It will be held on July 22-25, 1999.
