We had a great meeting in May, with lots of new faces and also lots of familiar ones (I was warned not to say "old faces." -Ed.). Our guest speaker was Charles E. Plaisance, author of the article on "Felicienne Plasencia and the Guilfou/Martinez Successions" in the last quarterly. He gave us some good ideas about writing a family history and doing research. He is writing a series of books on Louisiana Soldiers in the Civil War: Some Militia Units. There was a lively discussion after his talk. No speaker was scheduled for the upcoming meeting, so come prepared to share your own experiences with us. Don’t be shy. We’re all friends, and we may have something to add to your story, if you won’t mind. We’re expecting a visit from a past president (of the society, folks, not the U.S.). Her initials are T. V. H. I know you love a mystery, or you wouldn’t be genealogists, right?

A BIG "THANK YOU!"

All of us want to say thanks to those who helped put the quarterly together. The collators, the stackers, the guys who staple and the lifters. (You don’t think 80 quarterlies weigh a bunch? Try lifting one of those boxes.) Present and working were: Beverly Alford, Jess Bergeron, Lionel Bourdier, Marcie Cavalier, Essie Cavalier, Phil Chauvin, Jr., Carolyn Daigle, Gloria Hicks, Ed Hicks, Godfrey Olivier, Lou Ostheimer, Cecilia Richard, Dot Smith and Nancy Wright. Fourteen in all, and we were finished in about an hour and a half. Thanks, again.

CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS

In the last newsletter I changed the location of Christ Episcopal Church. It is located in Napoleonville, not Labadieville. Sorry, folks.

Also, I forgot to report the outcome of our vote on the By-Laws. We voted to delete the provision for Lifetime Members from our Constitution. So there will be no new lifetime memberships accepted. Those of you who already have a lifetime membership are assured of your continued benefits for as long as you live. And we do appreciate your vote of confidence in our society. When we first started it was a very "iffy" proposition, as they say. But with your support, and the support of ALL our members, we have maintained a quality organization with quality books and quarterlies to offer you the members, and now the world.

BOOKS

Speaking of quality books, if you want the pre-publication price on the revised Generations... book, you’d better write soon. We are getting orders in a steady stream.

Tim Hebert, our esteemed webmaster, has found the time to produce a book, besides everything else he does. It’s called Acadian Church Records: Port LaJoye, Ile St. Jean, 1749-1758, and it is said they are "the only surviving Acadian records left unpublished." He has it for sale on his web site. Talk about an interesting site. It’s http://www.genweb.net/acadian-cajun/ and it is helpful for beginners (with a step-by-step section) and those with more experience. Try it, even if you have to go to the local library and ask for help accessing it.

NEWS OF OUR MEMBERS

Congratulations to our renowned quarterly editor, Audrey Barnes Westerman, on her latest great-granddaughter, born on Audrey’s birthday, June 7, 2000, at Terrebonne General Hospital. Please welcome Justice Robin Hebert, daughter of Todd Mitchell Hebert and Shawna Reese of Thibodaux, LA. She weighed in at 7 lbs, and measured 18" from head to toe.

Audrey has been asked to speak at the August meeting of the Baton Rouge Genealogical Society. Good luck, Audrey.

Several of our members are on the sick list, and would appreciate our prayers and visits. Godfrey Olivier has been suffering through a series of hard luck situations. Leroy Bourgeois, Benny Bailey Naquin Hardberger, Larue S. LeBlanc are all under the weather. Pat and Minus Blanchard are well so far, but their daughter, Donna, still needs our prayers, as well as Pat’s dad.

Charter member Nellie Guidry lost her brother-in-law on Wednesday, May 31, 2000. Jimmie Maurice Guidry, Sr., is survived by his wife, Alice Pontif Guidry of Houma; one son, Jimmie Maurice Guidry, Jr., and wife Marcia L. Guidry; two brothers, Clifford and Leroy Guidry; one sister, Geraldine G. Doiron; and one granddaughter, Bethanie L. Guidry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jefferson and Josephine Boudreaux Guidry; two brothers, Jeffery (deceased charter member of T.G.S.) and Percy Guidry; and three sisters, Hilda G. Domangue, Lillian G. Matherne and Wilda Guidry. He was a retired security officer for Terrebonne General Hospital and was the manager of Houma Drive-In Theater for 29 years. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.

SEMINARS

Reserve August 5, 2000, all day (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) for the Lafourche Heritage Society’s 24th Annual Seminar on History and Genealogy. It will be held at the Howard Johnson Lodge on Highway 308 and N. Canal Blvd., Thibodaux, LA.

You won’t want to miss the presentations by Ned Jenkins, Barbara Allen, Judy Riffel and our own Tim Hebert. Pre-registration includes a buffet lunch. If you are in the Lufkin, TX, area around the end of July, you may want to reserve a dormitory room or motel accommodations, because the 2000 Angelina College Genealogy Conference will be held from Thursday, July 27, through Saturday, July 29, 2000. There will be a pre-conference Hands-on Computer Class for $50.00, and the complete conference is $110.00, including night programs. If you have been wanting to plan a trip to Salt Lake City, what better time could you pick than the Wednesday through Saturday, 6-9 September, 2000? That’s when the Federation of Genealogical Societies and Utah Genealogical Association will be presenting "A World of Records," their national family history conference next door to the world’s largest genealogical library. The first day will be devoted to sessions and lectures to 1) help local genealogical societies grow and better meet the needs of their members, or 2) host the APG (Association of Professional Genealogists) Conference, or 3) train Family History Center managers. Of course, you will want to visit the Family History Library so the staff and management of the FHL are willing to open the library for extended hours during the conference. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
