At the June meeting, member Cecil Escheté told us about his vacation in Canada, culminating in a visit to the site of the Sainte-Famille Cemetery at 419 Gabriel Road, Falmouth, Nova Scotia. He brought up the proposed ceremonies to "mark the preservation" of the cemetery on Sunday, 13 August 2000. Preceding the actual ceremony will be a walk in the Falmouth area on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. to visit the old Acadian sites (repeated at 1:30 p.m. on Monday). Then a special dedicated Mass the next morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. John Parish in Windsor, with another dedicated Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Mission, Hantsport. At 2:00 p.m. the ceremony will take place, followed by a reception at Sainte-Famille Winery. The Committee for the Preservation of Sainte-Famille Cemetery promises "lots of people" available to answer questions on the Acadian villages of the time. If you get a chance to go, ask about the "Legend of the Bell" and taste the wine that is named after it. The legend is rather facetious, since it talks about the fabulous treasure of gold pieces buried by the Acadian deportees when they learned of their eviction. Where they got the gold in the first place has yet to be answered to my satisfaction. And to think of the Acadians of that time as people of means is just impossible. But it is an excellent wine. A piece of good fortune let Cecil see the Times & Transcript for 17 June 2000. This is a newspaper published in Moncton, New Brunswick, and the headlines read "Historic Acadian village found." The article, which Cecil copied and brought back, tells of a military photo from the 1950s which shows the area around the Fort Lawrence area near Amherst. The infrared photo reveals the foundations of houses and buildings of the Acadian village Beaubassin. Two lines of squares run parallel to each other as they move along and you can almost picture the village’s main road running between them. Hopefully the Canadian government can acquire the land to keep it safe from commercial developers so that the site will be preserved for future generations. If anyone knows more about the subject, please let the Society know by contacting the newsletter editor at the address above.

ADDRESS CHANGES

Address changes is the subject; yours and ours. It’s vacation time, and we are getting some quarterlies returned by the post office. If your address has changed recently, and you haven’t notified us so we can change our records, you might owe us $2.50 for the re-mailing. I know, it’s very inconvenient. But the P.O. charges us when they ship it back to us, and we have to pay postage for mailing it a second time, so it all adds up.

After the first of August we will no longer be able to access our e-mail at the former service provider. We can receive mail at both addresses until then, so if you have any news, e-mail us by using the new address <edhicks@mobiletel.com>

HERE AND THERE

Member Juanita Chauvin is trying to find the French language version of "The Star Spangled Banner," the national anthem of the United States, that is. She says she heard it and would like to purchase the tape. If anyone knows where she can get a copy, please contact her at 108 Marmande St., Houma, LA 70363.

We received a letter from Don Landry who is active in the Landry Family Association stating that Francine Landry from Montréal, Québec, will be visiting Louisiana this summer. She would like to know of some Landry restaurants and Landry hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. She would also like to discuss genealogy. She is a descendant of Guillaume Landry (Québec 1653) and a retired school teacher. Contact her at <fr.l@videotron.ca>

If you were in attendance at the June meeting you may remember the query sent in by "Cousin John" Roger a.k.a. Allen Rogers, who wrote concerning a confusion with Marie Melanie Thibodaux. Jess Bergeron, our energetic Corresponding Secretary, was able to help clear up the confusion by pointing out the existence of two Marie Melanies. FRIENDS IN NEED

Several of our members are in need of your prayers and visits. Please pray for them -- call if you can. They are embarrassed by having their names in the newsletter, so just offer up a little prayer for all members who are in pain or discomfort. Also, board member Patty W. Gravois is concerned about her uncle, Msgr. Whitney, a priest of this diocese. Some local members may know him personally. Please pray that his good health may be restored to him.

BOOKS

Well, the pre-publication offer has expired, but the Generations...Past to Present (Revised) is going to have to wait until the summer quarterly is printed. Audrey has been having all sorts of trouble with her printing press. So things are kind of hectic at the Westerman House Publishers. Please be patient. It is next to top priority. (Bulletin-18 July: This just in from Audrey. The new drum is in place and performing very well.)

LAFOURCHE HERITAGE

Last month we stated that the pre-registration deadline was July 25 for the seminar. Wrong! We received the official flyer, and you may pre-register until August 2, 2000. Sorry about the mistake. Glad it was in the right direction.

The seminar will be on August 5, 2000, all day (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). That’s the Lafourche Heritage Society’s 24th Annual Seminar on History and Genealogy. It will be held at the Howard Johnson Lodge on Highway 308 and N. Canal Blvd., Thibodaux, LA.

You won’t want to miss the presentations by Ned Jenkins, Barbara Allen, Judy Riffel and our own Tim Hebert. Pre-registration includes a buffet lunch. Late registration will be accepted at the door, but, of course, will not include lunch. Pre-register for $28.00 by 2 August 2000. The address for contact is P. O. Box 913, Thibodaux LA 70302-0913.

A representative of Terrebonne Genealogical Society will be in attendance with some of our books.
