Our Christmas social meeting was very well
attended. Some friends we haven’t seen in a long while were there. Dorotha
Horvath, Pat and Minus Blanchard, Ed and Emelie Quin, Lois and Carl Burgamy,
just to name a few. It seemed to us that everyone enjoyed the food and
the camaraderie, not to mention the door prizes which made it all the way
through two rounds and started on another before the prizes ran out. I’m
not going to say who went back to the snack table for seconds and thirds
because someone might just have noticed me doing the same. Folks, the food
was some good!

This month marks our twentieth year, so at our January meeting we will
have a little observance of that fact. I hope it doesn’t sound too much
like bragging, because there were a few back in 1981 who gave us only five
years before we went “belly-up,” as the saying goes. Those people probably
either forgot what they said, or have moved on to better and more lasting
relationships, so I guess it doesn’t matter anyway. We’ll just celebrate
a very productive twenty years. Those of you who can remember those days
are welcome to come help us reminisce. We hope to have a birthday cake
of some sort, and elections, of course. The incumbents have all agreed
to run for another term so no one else has been nominated. However, nominations
from the floor will be opened, so if you have someone in mind for a certain
job, or for any position, for that matter, be sure to attend and speak
up.
Christopher Peña has a new book, The
Times and Journal of Alice Farmer: Yankee Visitor to Acadiana-New Orleans,
and has agreed to discuss it at the January meeting. You don’t want to
miss that, I’m sure. His last talk opened up a good bit of comment, as
I remember, and this one promises do the same. I understand that it touches
on the Underground Railroad at some point. Sounds like a good one!
WEDDING
Now it can be told. Board member Patty W.
Gravois announced that her son, Alex Bernard Gravois married Mary Grace
Richard on December 21, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in St Joseph Co-Cathedral in
Thibodaux, LA. Mary Grace is the daughter of Bernadette Legendre and Eugene
Richard, while Alex Bernard is the son of Patricia Ann Whitney and Albert
Anthony Gravois.
DEATH
It saddens us to announce the death of Bennie
Bailey Naquin Hardberger. She was the wife of Florian Max Hardberger; mother
of Pearl LaDelle, Norma Rae Defreese and Rita Naquin Rivault; sister of
John M. Bailey and Nancy Bailey Bordelon; mother-in-law of Randall Rivault;
and stepmother of Dottie, Karl and Max Hardberger. She is also survived
by ten grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her first husband, Roy “Walking Charlie” Naquin; parents, Arthur and
Pearl Mills Bailey; and brothers, Thomas, Andrew and Ina Baily Sumrall.
She will be remembered by the members of our society as a good friend,
always willing to help out.

One of our members has some “like new books”
for sale. The list is too long to be included here, but you can find out

Please call between 12:00 and 6:00 p.m. C.S.T. Mon. - Fri. (No collect
calls, please.) All sales are for cash, and are final. The books are described
as “Genealogy: Acadian-Cajun Library.” We presume postage is extra.
Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane
has a number of duplicate used books and periodicals available for sale.
Proceeds are used to purchase new books for the Louisiana State Archives
Research Room. If you are interested, you may email a request to Judy Riffel

she will send you an updated list. Some interesting items are being offered.
One is a genealogy of the Teisseire family, by Yves Teisseir, (written
in French) and another is a “calendar” of the Egan family collection, 1787
- 1955.
Don’t miss the pre-publication offer of the
1870 Lafourche Census. Many people depend on these books to “fill out”
the facts found in a census. More than indexes, these Census books are
prepared by experienced members of our society who are familiar with the
families and their interactions. You won’t regret reserving a copy, but
some day you MAY regret NOT doing so.
NEWS FROM FAMILIES
Interest in the 2004 Congrès Mondial
to be held in Nova Scotia is heating up. We received a newsletter from
the Daigle family association with a notice of a meeting (to discuss the
congrès) on February 3, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Public
Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA.The newsletter says the
meeting is at 2:00 p.m., but you are encouraged to come join many of your
cousins at Ralph and Kacoo’s before the meeting. Members will begin arriving
at 12:30 to have lunch, visit with those who are there and gossip about
those who are not. Ralph and Kacoo’s is located at 6110 Bluebonnet Blvd.,
about 30 blocks from the library. It says the members are to attend and
bring a friend or two, so I suppose if you have Daigle connections you
are certainly welcome. If you would like more information about the newsletter

JAMBOREE
If you live anywhere in southern California
you should make plans to attend the Southern California Genealogical Society’s
33rd Annual Genealogical Jamboree & Family History Faire, April 13
- 14, 2002. It will be held in the Exhibition Building of The Pasadena
Center, 300 East Green Street, Pasadena, CA. The event offers exhibits
relating to every aspect of genealogical research, as well as guest speakers
and classes, and it is said that the Jamboree is the largest annual genealogical
gathering west of the Mississippi. They sent us a brochure for exhibitors,
so we don’t have information about the registration of individuals.
