NEXT MEETING Saturday, August 30, 1997

East Branch Library, Gray, LA 10:00 a.m.

NOTE:
Due to an electrical problem, the meeting place will be changed for this month ... from the North Branch to the East Branch.

At our July meeting, Wade Usé brought some interesting shaving kits from "days gone by." The oldest was an Eveready kit from World War I, and the other was a civilian kit made by Gillette. Wade rescued them from being discarded because he realized their value. Wade was a barber for many years. We heard about the Louisiana State Archives at 3851 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge celebrating its tenth anniversary on Saturday, August 23, with a Genealogy Seminar. Contact person is Ellen Brown (504) 922-0750.

HELP! HELP!

The summer quarterly will be put together Thursday, August 28, at the North Branch in Gray. Please be there at 12:00 noon.

LOCAL CAJUN BOY IS NATIONAL CHAMP

Brett Michael Aucoin, grandson of Audrey Westerman, won the Youth National Championship in the 2000 Meter Steeplechase at the Junior Olympics held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida July 2-6. Brett is 16 years old, a Junior at Assumption High School, and maintains a 3.2 average, hoping to win a scholarship for college. He is the son of Arthur Aucoin, Jr. and Luane Westerman Aucoin and lives in Labadieville. Brett is one of 25 members of the Lafourche-Terrebonne-Assumption (LTA) Club coached by Chad Callais, Cross-Country Coach and Assistant Track Coach at Nicholls State University. Brett is also the District 16 (Louisiana and Mississippi) Champ of the 2000 Meter Steeplechase and the 3000 Meter Run (two events), in addition to placing first in many other competitions in Cross-Country running.

The opening and closing ceremonies were akin to the World Olympics and beautiful. The sad part is this team has no funding and therefore each member (many are from one-parent homes) must provide his own equipment, lodging and food expense and pay the entrance fees to participate in competitions in Louisiana and surrounding states; each team member even had to buy his own uniform. Coach Callais donates his time working with the best runnersin the tri-parish area and the team works hard, in training year-round.

Coach Callais proudly walked away from the Junior Olympics with three National Champs: Renzi Sanders, from Lower Lafourche, who placed first in the Javelin Throw, second in the Discus, and third in the Shot Put; Richard Rashal, from Belle Rose, who became All-American in the 2000 Meter Steeplechase; and Brett.

Brett and many team members give time in community service to the elderly, cutting grass, cleaning yards, and washing houses as part of their religion training. It's sad that in three parishes there are not enough caring professionals and businesses interested in helping financially sponsor good kids.

MEMBER NEWS

Enola Theriot is getting around the house with a walker, nowadays, since her surgery July 23. The doctors did a total knee replacement. She is looking forward to trying out her new knee by going to TGS meetings and maybe a little dancing.

Lifetime member Marlene Beauvais Folse told me at the meeting that she and her husband, Hodges, were planning to attend the national Marine Corps League and Auxiliary Convention in Nashville, TN. They were to travel by van with other members and stay through August 9th. Hope they had a good time!

LIBRARIES

At the July meeting we also heard that the Terrebonne Parish Library is moving their Genealogy Collection to a new location. I know that those who live in the Central Business District will not be thrilled, but I think it will prove very convenient to our out-of-town friends. Evelyn told us that she hoped to have everything in place and ready to be used by September 1. When we had our board meeting on the 16th of August, the microfilm reader/printer was there, along with a shelf of microfilm rolls, so why don’t you go and try it out?

Jefferson Parish’s Lobby Library has moved its Genealogy Collection to a new location, too. They have a new "huge" library building on West Napoleon near its intersection with Clearview. It makes it easy for visitors, too. Just go in on I-10 from the east or west and exit at Clearview. Head south from I-10 (toward the river, if you are familiar with the New Orleans layout). When you get to W. Napoleon, turn right. After a hundred yards, or so, you will see a bank, a shopping center, and the library building. Genealogy is on the second floor. Good hunting! If you get lost, call Jessica Travis at (504) 838-1190.

SEMINARS & REUNIONS

Speaking of Jefferson Parish, the Jefferson Genealogical Society is having their 13th Annual Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, 4 October 1997 at the Holiday Inn Select (I-10 at Williams Blvd., Kenner).Desmond Walls Allen, a nationally-known genealogist will be the featured speaker. Registration is only $28.00 before 29 August. After that it will be $36.00, so hurry, you don’t have much time. You may want to write without waiting for an application blank. Besides the usual name, etc., they want to know if you would like the Beef Bourguignon, Grilled Lemon Herb Chicken, or Shrimp Etouffée. You could include a list of surnames you are researching for their surname index. Mail it to: Jefferson Genealogical Society, Chairman, Workshop Committee, PO Box 961, Metairie, LA 70004-0961. For accommodations call 1-800-HOLIDAY.

The Pierre Chastain Family Association is holding their Annual Reunion in October, too. From the 17th to the 19th. Chastain family records will be available for research. They ask that you bring documented proof about your family line to validate information on record. Crafts will be auctioned, too. Questions? Contact Loyce Coolidge, 1912 Green Mountain, #201-K, Little Rock, AR 72212-4005. Phone: (501) 223-2114. E-mail: LoyceC@aol.com

The Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society is giving a Computer Workshop with a number of good topics and lecturers, including Judith Lanoux Hamner and Michael K. Smith. Registration is $15.00 which includes coffee breaks, but no lunch. On-site registration is from 9:00 to 9:30, but they do recommend pre-registration, since seating is limited. Send your name phone number(s) and address(es) to Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society, PO Box 82060, Baton Rouge, LA 70884-2060.
