QUARTERLY PARTY!
     We will be putting the quarterly together at the North Branch Library Meeting Room on Thursday, March 23 at about noon. If enough good workers show up, we may finish in record time.Last-minute news break: Terrebonne Genealogical Society held their biennial election of officers and board members at the February meeting. It was a surprise to no one that all the officers ran unopposed for their respective offices. One new board member was elected by unanimous vote. Wanda Fitch Moore is the newly elected board member, replacing Daniel C. “Chuck” Guidry who resigned his position due to pressures at his job and home. The officers and board members will be installed in a ceremony at the upcoming March meeting. Elected officers are as follows: Phil Chauvin Jr., President; Edgar Hicks, Vice-President; Sheila Rodrigue, Recording Secretary; Jess Bergeron, Corresponding Secretary; Nancy Lowrie Wright, Treasurer; Essie Cavalier, Louis Duet, Patricia Whitney, Wanda F. Moore, Directors.
  
DEATH: 
     Our deepest sympathies go out to lifetime member and author Phoebe CHAUVIN MORRISON who suffered the loss of her husband on March 3, 2006. Glen Charles MORRISON was a native of York Township, IN, former resident of Fremont, IN, and resident of Houma, LA. Besides his wife, he is survived by his stepmother, Bettie M. MORRISON; sons Allen Lee, Jerry Wayne and Thomas Glen MORRISON; brothers Roger and Larry MORRISON; sisters Melanie M. SINDEL and Debbie M. KEENER; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney J. And Zelma L. KUGLER MORRISON; and daughter Barbara Jean MORRISON. He was a retired master tractor-trailer driver for J. W. Walker Trucker.
 
BIRTH: 
     Evangeline Anne HICKS, born to Paul Frederick HICKS, son of Edgar and Gloria GRAVOIS HICKS, and his wife, Loralie Dawn HOUSTON HICKS, daughter of Lorna BALLENGER HOUSTON and the late Clyde Lee HOUSTON. Paul and Loralie are residents of Winchester, VA. Evangeline weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. at birth and measured 20 inches in length. She was born at 10:54 p.m. on Mardi Gras, 28 February 2006. She joins brothers Troy and Mason HICKS.
 
THS TIGER ALUMNI: 
     Our erudite webmaster, Tim HEBERT has embarked on a new project. Terrebonne High School will be observing its 100th anniversary in 2008, and Tim is working on a website to help celebrate the occasion and is helping to produce a book, as well. So far, he has scanned the yearbooks from 1916, 1939 and 1943 and has put them online for all to see. He is looking for funny/interesting stories from alumni over the years, along with any photos or missing yearbooks that he can copy.      Two grand old men, three rising stars and a shipwreck... Isn’t that an intriguing theme for a symposium? The event is the BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO SYMPOSIUM VI, and it will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at the Hilton Hotel Conference Center at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas.      The total cost of $40.00 includes lunch and parking. Be there at 8:30 a.m. and expect to finish by 3 p.m. The program will be supplemented with Texana exhibits, book and art dealers, so allow some time to browse, OK? CONTACT YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY: 
     We all found out how it is possible to lose touch with your family and friends, especially during a major disaster like a hurricane. If the disaster is localized, you may be able to take advantage of cell phones, email or websites. During the most recent disaster, many cell phones were unavailable, so email helped. Suppose there were a website that was designed for people to keep in touch with their families? Such a website is called Southeastern Louisiana Genealogy Forum, and registration is free, they just require that you jump through several hoops, including a “New Account” email to your address, giving you an extra-long URL to type in and a complicated activation key to punch in. After that you have to wait for someone to approve of you. I hope they don’t reject you if your name is not Cajun. I won’t make it. Anyway, it sounded like a good idea.
     While we are on the subject, has your family or group decided on a disaster plan? Do you have a contact person assigned where all the members can report to when the normal systems go down? As a group, the TGS board members are considering such a plan just in case. I would advise every church, office, society and family to think about it. Remember, it can happen here.
 
WAR BETWEEN THE STATES: 
     Do you have a soldier in your ancestry chart? Specifically one who fought on either side of that war known by many names, “Civil War” being one of them, although it was anything but “civil,” according to what I have read. But have no fear, internet help is on the way. For pension records, both Union and Confederate, why don’t you give the following website a try: http://www.genealogybranches.com/civilwar/. A caveat, however: if your soldier fought on the Confederate side, he may not have been able to apply for a pension unless he was disabled or indigent. Most Union soldiers (or their widows or dependents) applied for pensions. Another site you could try would be http://www.militaryindexes.com/civilwar/ What do you have to lose?
 
NEW AND DIFFERENT: 
     That is the subtext of the Birthplace of American Genealogy conference sponsored by the Federation of Genealogical Societies in conjunction with the New England Historic Genealogical Society. The 2006 FGS/NEHGS Conference in Boston, Massachusetts will be held 30 August - 2 September at the Hynes Convention Center. If you are an officer of a genealogy society, you may be interested in the first day’s offerings with sessions on society management. The program is so filled with lectures, workshops, luncheons, and other events that we just couldn’t fit everything in this space.
