THE MAY MEETING WAS UPSTAIRS IN THE GENEALOGY ROOM. We had a few new guests attend this meeting. How joyful to see new people coming to our meeting. It’s like the spark we need to set a fire!! You know when you have been doing this for so long, you forget that many people don’t really know how to search and find things in the genealogy department of the Terrebonne Parish Library. You may see the computers, but do you know how and what genealogy programs the library has on them, or how to search for the names you are looking for. What about the other resources at your fingertips, like the Oral History Tapes, or the microfilms, do you know what to do with them or how to use them. It is like when you had show and tell at school. What fun!!! Knowledge is power!
At the last couple of meeting we heard part of an Oral History Tape of Wisteria CARLOS that talked about the Floating Palace. The Bayou Playhouse, 101 Main Street, Lockport, LA did a play Floating Palace by Glen PITRE and Michelle BENOIT MAY. It ran May 1 to June 14, 2009. If you are interested some of their other plays see their website www.bayouplayhouse.com .
GOOD NEWS from Ed HICKS: some of our Oral History Tapes from the Memories of Terrebonne Project are available on our website. We can access them from this site: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laterreb/tgs/memories.htm . They are not linked to the main site, yet, as far as I know. Be on the lookout for developments in this area. Ed is going through the collection by number, not by name. So far, he has digitized all the tapes up to number 65, with a couple of exceptions. Unfortunately, not all are online, at the present writing. When you click on a recording, it should start after a minute or two, depending on the type of Internet connection (dial-up or DSL) and computer setup. The way Tim HEBERT has them displayed, they will start playing on Windows Media Player or QuickTime Player before they are completely downloaded. Once completely downloaded, you can save it to your computer and listen to it as many times as you wish, or write (transcribe) it word for word. We have already put some of them in the Quarterly. [Note: you may have trouble listening to the recordings with Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. Follow the instructions at the top of the page for downloading without listening.]
We also had a chance to see Tim HEBERT. Do you know who Tim HEBERT is? He is the Webmaster of our TGS website. He plans on making some nice changes to the website. Plus a new user friendly website address. Stay tuned!

PURCHASES
We have been talking to Darryl Eschete about the possibility of the genealogy society paying the additional money for the lease of another copier for the genealogy department. The Director said the library could not afford to do that. Darryl suggested that the society could look into leasing one for the department. Based on the experience of others, the lease, including maintenance, could cost us about $250 per month. Any thing over and above the normal maintenance of the copier would have to be paid by us. There was no discussion or information about a coin machine attachment. That would be necessary to limit the use. This copier would be accessible to all library patrons. Free copies would mean much more use, therefore the increased opportunity for breakage. The board decided not to pursue a copier for the genealogy department any further.
