The July meeting was interesting. Several "new" genealogists were there, and they talked about their lines of research. Jess Bergeron had a Bible which had been discovered at an accident scene that had a lot of family history with dates and places relating to a Smith family of Naples and Cedar Keys, Florida. If you have any ties to that family, or know someone who has, would you please contact the Society at the mail address above. Alton Detiveaux needs help translating an old book, written in Old French from the Latin, with some of it in a more modern french. Printed in 1881 in Limoges, France, it originally came out in 1572, and has an early Benois [sic] genealogy. Again, contact the Society if you would like to help.After a suggestion that some of us could use help getting started in using the computer for genealogy and the internet, Bob Gordon of the Jefferson Genealogical Society told us about the Computer Special Interest Group (SIG) that is associated with the JGS. They meet on the last Thursday of the month at the home of Shirley Benz, 4829 Jasper in Metairie from 7:30-9:30 p.m. For more information, see their newsletter. Jefferson Genealogical Society plans to have an information tent at the Celtic Nations Festival which is to be held on Oct. 24 & 25 in Jefferson Parish. If you need help, be there.
Nancy and Elly Wright are proud to announce the birth of their granddaughter, Allie Shea Wright on 18 August 1998 at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. She weighed 4 lb., 11 oz., and is the daughter of Neta Jones Wright and "Doc" Wright. The other grandparents are Frances and B. Jones. Mother and daughter are doing fine. They came home Friday.
Long-time member of TGS, Anna Lee Babin Himel, age 68, died on August 12, 1998. She was anative of New Orleans and resident of Lockport, widow of Edward J. Himel, Jr.; daughter of Willis Babin and Orphise (Champagne) Babin, both deceased; stepsister of Clarence "C.J." Ledet. "Anne" was a member of TGS, Holy Savior Ladies Altar Society, board member of Lafourche Heritage Society, the Bayou Lafourche Folklife Heritage Museum and the Lafourche Parish Tourist Commission. She was buried in Holy Savior Church Cemetery in Lockport. Her death will leave an empty spot in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
Joseph Michael "Chip" Horvath, son of memberMrs. Dorotha Wheeler Horvath of Houma and J. Richard "Dick" Horvath of Oakdale LA, died on August 14, 1998 in LaPlace LA. He is survived by his mother, father, stepmother Doris, son Ricky Horvath of Boone NC, daughter Magan Horvath of Oakdale LA, and sister R. A. "Trinket" Johnson of Sulphur LA. "Chip" was a member of the Yellow Pine Masonic Lodge in Oakdale and was a respiratory therapist. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Oakdale LA. We extend our condolences to Dorotha and her family.
Phoebe C. Morrison, Nancy L. Wright, and Philip Chauvin Jr. are currently preparing three books for publication: the 1870 census of Lafourche Parish, the 1880 census of Lafourche Parish, and the 1880 census of Terrebonne Parish. A columnar format has been designed which will put double the listings on each page, thereby reducing the total pages for each book and holding down the price of the books. Each book will be fully indexed. Because of poor spelling of names on the 1870 Lafourche census, members have worked to properly identify and annotate each family listing, which has taken several years. It will be a wonderful research tool when completed. Watch for publication notices.
Our newest book, Church History and Cemetery Listing: Napoleonville, Louisiana, should be ready for distribution by the end of this month. Hard covers were available only on pre-publication orders (before Aug. 15), but soft covers are still available for purchase. By the way, in case you haven't met them, Essie Joseph Cavalier is a man, his wife is Marceline "Marcie" (nee Landry) Cavalier. They worked a long time on this book mapping and listing the marked graves of the cemeteries, compiling the history of each church, and gathering photographs of the churches and cemeteries. There is a brief history of Napoleonville in the beginning of the book and the index is complete, not just surnames. Price with soft cover is now $25.00 plus $3 postage if mailed.
Sheila Rodrigue spent her vacation in Canada and flew back the day before the Lafourche Heritage Seminar. She got stuck in Texas overnight and after arriving at the airport around 8 a.m., drove straight to the seminar. She surely traveled the longest distance to get to the seminar and had to stay up all Friday night to get there. Sheila also brought back a "Show & Tell" from Canada, which has great genealogical value to every member who has Canadian ancestry. But, we are not telling; we promised. You have to come to themeeting of August 29 to see.
Julie & Gilbert Breaux of Jackson, MS, and Georgia Foret of Houma, LA, have had their Summer TLL returned because of change of address. Please send $3 to reimburse us for postage on the return and to re-mail.
Belated CONGRATULATIONS to member Alton Detiveaux and Rose, his wife, on their Golden Anniversary. They were surprised with a party on June 6 which was sponsored by their four daughters and their spouses, Ellen and Melvin Ledet, Janis and Merlin LeBoeuf, Evelyn and Eugene McElroy, and Pamela and Steven Spence. And the generations are moving along. Alton and Rose have eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Those who have been wondering where the "Lockport" of the 1870 Terrebonne census was will be pleased to know it was NOT the Lafourche Parish town on Bayou Lafourche. It was actually Point Barré on Bayou Terrebonne, which comes from Lake Barré, a locked in lake.
Jess Bergeron wants to know if anyone can identify the parents of Aniece Victor who was married to Francois Guidry ca. 1900 at Rayne LA (Acadia Parish). He is stuck on the Victor family and trying to give help to another researcher. You may respond to the TGS mailing address if you know.
The Third Dominique Family Reunion will be on Saturday, October 10, 1998 at Bayou Segnette State Park, Shelter #6, 7777 Westbank Expressway, Westwego LA. Bring your own lunch and chairs.
