We need your help, PLEASE!!!
     We will be collating the quarterly at the North Branch Library in Gray on Thursday, September 23, 1999, at 12:00 noon. If you can possibly be there, please make the effort. We want our quarterly to be the BEST.
     The August meeting was very well attended, and we were rewarded by a fascinating tale of the early days of Donaldsonville, when it was the first capital of the new state of Louisiana. Mr. Andrew Capone told of his first stirrings of interest in history when he discovered no less than seven cannonballs in the yard of his home in central Donaldsonville, next to the sisters' convent. He then explained Donaldsonville's role in the Civil War and the shelling of the town by Union forces. I, for one, was spellbound by his tales of battles and later political machinations. Hats off to Mr. Capone. (He said, "Yes, I am related to Al -- all Capones are related.") For the September meeting we have invited Preston Guillotte to show the videotape of the story of the Guillot family. His travels to discover his heritage took him to France, Acadia, and finally back to Louisiana, and he can tell about the Guillot family research. Don't miss it.
     At the August meeting we prayed for several of our members: Emelie B. Quin had surgery on the Friday before the meeting, and Louis Duet's wife Sharon had surgery just the Wednesday before the meeting, with complications following. Larue LeBlanc was diagnosed with a serious illness. Please join your prayers with ours. Julie and Gil Breaux sent a note of thanksgiving for a miracle of healing. They are looking forward  to coming back to the meetings and asked us to tell all their cousins that they say "Hi!"

SUMMER QUARTERLY
     The following members had their Terrebonne Life Lines issue returned to us: J. Dwain Broussard, Troy Cenac, and Tanya Ditto. To mail them to the corrected address will take another $3.00 sent to Jess Bergeron at the society address.

DEATHS
     Member Emelie Boudreaux Quin lost her brother Robert Joseph Boudreaux on 28 June 1999. He was born on 17 March 1924, and was preceded in death by his parents, René Emelie Boudreaux of St. James, and Olympe Emelia Daigle of Schriever. He died in New Orleans.
Charter member Larue Smith LeBlanc suffered the loss of her brother, too. Curtis Armon Smith died Tuesday, 31 August 1999. He is survived by his wife, Isabel Dias Smith, one brother, Woody K. Smith, and another sister, Marie Futch. Also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Armon and Rosa Lee Ogden Smith; and two brothers, Harom Loy and Robert M. Smith. He was a U.S.Army World War II veteran.
     We sympathize with Board member Louis Duet  who recently lost his aunt, Elvine Marie Duet Benoit, 91. She is survived by one brother, Sidney Joseph Duet, Sr.; and children Diana Marie B. (Albert) Bergeron (Tommy Roy) Tomms, Carroll Paul "Caro" (twin), and Juanita Marie B. (Calvin John, Jr.) Prevost. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas Joseph and Julia Marie Ponvelle Duet; siblings, Mrs. Philodie Marie D. (Philibert Henry) Guillot, Mrs. Lydie Zulmée D. (Louis Philllippe) Duet, Mrs. Lydia Marie D. (Ferdinand John) Himel, Valcour Lewis, Silvain Louis, Sr., Joseph Clincy, Alton Joseph, and Ashton Nicholas; husband, Herbert Ambroise; children, Calvin Joseph and Theresa (twin), and 1 grandson, Jody Tomms.

     Our sister organization, the Jefferson Genealogical Society, has a number of genealogy books for sale. Some of these are: New Orleans City Directory, years range from 1964-1996 (but not all years); The Magazine of American Genealogy, issues 7, 8, and 23; certain issues of New Orleans Genesis from Mar. 1962 to Jan. 1999; Acadian Genealogy Exchange (edited by Janet Jehn) from Oct. 1988 through Oct. 1998 (unbroken set); two issues of The Deep Delta Quarterly (Plaquemines parish); and three issues of Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association's The Genie. FALL SEMINARS
     I hope this is not reaching you too late. There is a notice that no refunds for cancellations will be received after Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999. But you can register at the door for $30.00 with a $5.00 additional charge for your spouse. It is the Southeast Texas Genealogical & Historical Society of Beaumont, TX, and the guest speaker will be Mrs. Trevia Wooster Beverly. The Fall Conference will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, the date of our next meeting. If you are a resident of southeast Texas, you may choose to stay close to home. Topics include "Researching the Silent Cities," "Information is Everywhere: Knowing Where to Look," "How to Find Your Ancestors at Clayton Library and Genealogy Research Center," and "Frontier Genealogy - An Introduction to the Draper Manuscripts & The Shane Collection."
