NEXT MEETING Saturday, January 25, 2003
North Branch Library, Gray, LA 1:00 p.m.
HAVE YOU PAID YOUR DUES?
Check your address label.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!...from the officers and Board of Directors of
Terrebonne Genealogical Society. We hope your holidays were restful and
happy. We all had a wonderful time at the Christmas social. We saw some
members whom we hadn’t seen in a while. Last Christmas, to be exact. It
was good to get together and just enjoy each other’s company, catching
up on the news. We also met some new friends. Some had never been to a
meeting of our society. I hope they don’t think our meetings are that laid
back all year round.
The new year means that our membership year is drawing
to a close, so we must remind you to get your dues to us soon. I included
a reminder in last month’s newsletter, but neglected to give the membership
options available. Here they are: Individual membership, $25; Family membership,
$30; Contributing member, $30; Libraries, $22. You say you can’t remember
if you paid your dues or not? Then look at the address label on this
newsletter. If, somewhere on the label, you see, besides your name and
address, the notation “EX 02/03" then you have not paid your dues for the
coming year and your membership expires next month (February, 2003). No
more of our very informative quarterlies, no more of our informative and
entertaining newsletters. Too bad, you need to mail us your dues. If you
see the notation “EX 02/03 EX 02/04" then you are paid up through February
of 2004. Good for you. You have paid your dues for the rest of this membership
year and all of the coming year. A handful of members will see this: “EX
02/04" only. That means that their membership begins next month and covers
all of the next membership year. They will receive their first quarterly
with Volume 22, No. 1 — Spring of 2003. Please send your address (including
the nine-digit Zip code), phone number (including area code), and email
address with your dues. We have some old information
in our files that we need to clear out. There have been some changes in
telephone area codes, and with the mergers and failures of some dot-com
companies, some email addresses have changed. We often need to contact
our members about their memberships or book orders or articles they have
written for the quarterly and it is time-consuming and frustrating to keep
getting those “no contact” recordings or “Mail delivery subsystem” messages.
We promise not to give or sell your address to any marketing service or
advertiser. Honest.
DEATHS
We are sorry to have to report the death of the
mother-in-law of member Francis N. Mouille of Church Point, LA. Mrs. Irene

Francis de Sales Cathedral Parish, a member of the Altar Society, Catholic
Daughters of America and ANAWIM.
Our sympathies go out to faithful member Lou Ostheimer,
who lost his mother last month. Helen Bazet Ostheimer died Friday, 27 December
2002. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy O. And Charles

was a retired Terrebonne Parish public school teacher, former teacher at
St. Matthew’s Episcopal School, member of the Retired Teachers of Terrebonne,
Delta Kappa Gamma and former member of the Terrebonne Genealogical Society.
THANKS A MILLION
It was through the teamwork of eleven good workers
that we are able to enjoy our Winter Quarterly. Those who came out and
helped were: Phil Chauvin, Brenda Folse, Jeanette Haydel, Ed Hicks, Lou
Ostheimer, Laurie Patton, Cecilia Richard, Dot Smith, Marilyn Sonnier,
Jane Webert and Nancy Wright. Many thanks to you, each and every one.
A CERTIFIED GENEALOGIST
At the December Christmas Social it was announced
that Audrey Barnes Westerman received her certification from the Board
for Certification of Genealogists in Washington, D.C. She is one of only
three in the whole state of Louisiana! This gives her the right to put
the initials C.G.R.S. after her name. If you have ever seen those letters
and wondered what they stand for, it is “Certified Genealogy Records Specialist.”
Congratulations, Audrey, you certainly deserve the honor. You worked for
it.
A BARGAIN IN BOOKS
Member Lou Ostheimer needs to make more room in
his house, so he is offering his collection of back issues of the Terrebonne
Life Lines. He has a complete set, going back to Volume 1, No. 1 in 1982.
He is willing to part with them for $20 per 4-issue volume, and $15 for
Volume 1 (only three issues). He would prefer to sell them in volume sets.
If you have any further questions, contact him at 503 Mire St., Houma,
LA, 70364-2015, or call him at 985-876-7562. Please, no collect calls.
Thanks.
ESTIMATED DATE OF COMPLETION
It was reported here that the new Terrebonne Parish
Library Main Branch would be completed by 1 March 2003. Due to some unexpected
delays, the new date will be 12 April 2003. That is a Saturday, so we can
probably expect some opening ceremonies, right kids?
IDENTITY THEFT
This is a relatively new crime, folks, and some
of us are not quite sure what it is, how people commit the crime, and what
honest citizens can do to prevent it. It would behoove each one of us to
get knowledgeable as fast as she or he can, so that we won’t become victims.
Be sure to take the time to visit the website http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/
and study the available material carefully. It is really for your own good.
Thanks to Louis Duet for this “wake up call.” |
