Main Library, Houma, LA 1:00 p.m. Surprise guest speaker for our July meeting
was our own Tim HEBERT. Tim is the webmaster for the society’s web page
at the address given above, but he is also a published author, and maintains
a really neat site of his own. If you haven’t visited, yet, you owe it
to yourself to experience it. I’ve seen some fantastic web sites in my
day, but this is among the top ten. I’m serious. It’s at http://www.acadian-cajun.com/.
While you are there, check out his new book. He brought it to the meeting
to show us. I can’t say enough about it. This is a quote from his home
page: “The latest Acadian-Cajun book is now in print. It is an atlas
of all places ... over 100 maps --- over 200 images ... related to Acadians
and Cajuns. This includes multiple maps over the years of Acadia,
France, and Louisiana of course. It also includes maps of lands related
to the Acadians and their travels ... such as England, French colonies,
and American colonies. Several of the maps will be posted online.”

DEATH -- It saddens us to hear of any death, but especially of one of our strongest supporters. Marie HOTARD THERIOT was a charter member and a lifetime member. She died Tuesday, July 22, 2003. She is survived by two sons, Robert Lee THERIOT and wife, Helen, and Ernest Felix THERIOT and wife Karen, one daughter, Ann T. SANDERS and husband Gerald; three sisters, Mildred SOFTLEY, Joyce MARCEL and Louise MOORE; six grandchildren, James Robert, John Anderson, Aaron F. THERIOT, Jennifer SANDERS RUSSELL, Scott G. SANDERS and Rebecca THERIOT FINGER; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy THERIOT; her parents, Ernest and Clara HOTARD; four brothers, Alban, Alred, Faris and Ernest HOTARD; and sister Lorena BROWN. She was a retired banker and shopkeeper, a past member and Queen of the Krewe of Hyacinthians, an avid gardener and genealogist. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, founder of Wishing Well and a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. BOOKS -- Is there anyone among your family and friends who is an “early bird” Christmas shopper? Well you just might want to hint that the Terrebonne Genealogical Society is having a book sale. It’s a clearance sale because our inventory of unsold books is getting unwieldy. Do us a favor and stock up on some of our publications that you’ve been drooling over but never thought you could afford. Some of the bargains are going for 33% off the usual price. The complete (4 issues) volumes of our Terrebonne Life Lines, which usually sell for $30 will be discounted 33% to sell for $20.00 apiece. Of course, that only applies to Volumes 9 through 22 (years 1990 through 2002). Some other bargains are Assumption Pioneer Newspaper Deaths, Weddings, etc normally $35 will be going for $28.00, and Generations!...Past to Present Revised, Corrected is a $45 book going for $35.00. FEEDBACK -- One of the ways we raise money to buy books and equipment for the Terrebonne Public Library is through the sale of books produced by our members. One of our publications is the Comet Microfilm Index: Deaths, Weddings, Births published yearly. We need to know if this is helpful to you and would you be interested in purchasing a printed copy? HEBERT PUBLICATIONS -- Is the name of the company that produces Father Hebert’s books as well as many others. By the time you read this, Volume 42 of Southwest Louisiana Records (SWLR) may already be published. When I checked their website it was listed with the others as “soon to be published.” But Bonnie is planning to email her best customers about the upcoming event. If you are interested, email her at << bonibeau at bellsouth.net>> The information I got indicates that the publication is limited to 500 copies. Bonnie also plans to publish Colonial Marriages (compiled by Winston DEVILLE and Jacky VIDRINE) after Provincial Publications prints a limited number. DIOCESE OF BATON ROUGE -- Volume 20 of the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records is now available. This volume contains abstracts of all ecclesiastical records of the baptisms, marriages and burials within the territory of what is now the Diocese of Baton Rouge for the period 1895-1896. Sales tax per volume is: US$3.15 for purchases delivered within East Baton Rouge civil Parish, and US$1.40 for purchases delivered elsewhere in Louisiana. Libraries and out-of-State mailings are not subject to sales tax. Mailing charges: US$4.00 for the first book and US$1.00 for each additional book. Prepayment by check or money order is required. They are unable to handle credit card purchases or process purchase orders (even from libraries). SEMINARS -- The Genealogical Societies of Metropolitan New Orleans are presenting a Genealogical Research Seminar on Saturday, November 8, 2003, at Jones Hall on the Tulane University Campus from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This seminar is designed to focus attention on “Spanish Colonial Louisiana Genealogy and History” and will include a session on “Using the Internet for Research.” In addition to a seated gourmet Spanish lunch, refreshments will be served during breaks, and book vendors will be available. Starting about 1870, the staff of the Wisconsin Historical Society made a catalog card for every biographical sketch in each new Wisconsin county history. They made a similar card for every obituary added to the scrapbooks they called the “Wisconsin Necrology,” and frequently added cards for magazine and newspaper articles about Wisconsin residents. After more than a century of such work, the data on the original cards was typed into a database that you can search online today. It’s called the Wisconsin Name Index and can be found at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wni. While you are there, you can order Wisconsin birth, marriage and death records issued before Oct. 1907. Search these records at http://wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/ogrs/. Other databases are available. Check it out. Closer to home, we have the Historical Research Center of the Diocese of Houma - Thibodaux at 205 Audubon Ave., Thibodaux, LA 70301. Open Mon., Tues. and Thurs. 8:00 - 4:00 (closed for an hour at noon).Official records concerning church operation, administrative decisions of local pastors, select records of the Archdiocese of New Orleans pertaining to the area and a variety of correspondence are among the records kept. Parish registers prior to and including 1910 can now be found only in the Historical Research Center. These parish registers contain the following information: birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, death and burial documentation. Certified copies of records are available at the Historical Research Center. Phone 985-446-2383, Fax 985-449-0574. FAMILY GROUP SHEET PROJECT -- This is a new project for Rootsweb. Evidently you submit a “well-documented family group sheet” and the names will be listed by states. I haven’t tried it, but Audrey WESTERMAN thinks all of us should send in our lines to maybe make some connections. She thinks it might be better than posting queries. They keep these group sheets up forever, I think. It is conditional until December 2003 and they will make a final decision then. Try it and see if you think it will work. The website URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs. Let me know your opinion. CMA 2004 - NOVA SCOTIA -- We heard from Janice T. Burnett, a Boston based tour director and 11th generation Acadian. She’s putting together a tour for family members to tour Nova Scotia and attend the d’Entremont reunion in Pubnico, Nova Scotia in August 2004. She needs a few more d’Entremonts on the motor coach to take advantage of group rates. Sounds like a good deal. I only have her email address, but if you are interested you might look her up.
