The March meeting went well. Our program consisted of a meeting-within-a-meeting. Because of cutbacks in the Library system (the tax did not pass), we will not be able to meet at the regular 1:00 p.m. time until further notice. So Phil took a "poll" of the members present to see which would be less inconvenient: 1) changing the location to the SLECA building on Coteau Road or 2) changing the time of the meetings to a morning time, the location unchanged. When we got the results of the poll, we had a board meeting to change the time of the meeting. The North Branch was not available for the last Saturday in April, so it was moved up to the third (repeat, third) Saturday in April. Please change your calendars for this meeting, but we should be OK for the rest of the year, going back to the last Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the North Branch Library in Gray.
Denis Savard sent us his "regular" mail address for those of us without E-mail capability. Write to him at <59, rue Arran> <Campbellton, N.-B.> <E3N 1L3> <CANADA> (The little carets <> are to indicate line breaks). He still needs Arceneaux/Arsenaux (any spelling) brides and grooms from St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson. He said there are other parishes farther to the west and north, if you are interested.
Edward and Emelie Boudreaux Quin ask for prayers for their son, Edward E. Quin, IV who has been anticipating a kidney transplant for a year, now.
Remember, too, the health of Bennie Naquin, who has been under the weather, lately.
We are sorry to have to report the death of Lifetime Member Marie Elise Duplantis, who died March 13, 1997. She is survived by one sister, Irma Martha Duplantis, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Caliste Alexis and Edna Daspit Duplantis, Sr., three brothers and one nephew.
Member Inez Adams lost her brother, Ives Raymond Adams, on March 28 of this year. He is also survived by his daughter, Jo Ann Barbier, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He waspreceded in death by his parents, Ives Adams and Felicie Mire, his wife and one sister.
We have had quarterlies returned for various reasons during the membership year. The most frustrating reason is "Temporarily Away." It seems that some Post Offices cannot hold printed material for delayed delivery, so they send it back to us at our expense. We must pay postage to re-mail it, after paying to get the quarterly back. Please send $3.00 if you want your quarterly mailed to you.

The Executive Board met "in Executive Session" to discuss the financial situation of the society. The news is not good, folks. Because of rising costs of almost everything, we will be making some cut-backs and price increases. The newsletter will be restricted to a single page, front and back, mail orders for books will cost more for shipping and handling, we will decrease the number of quarterlies printed per quarter, and increase the price of bound quarterlies. Look for an increase in membership dues for next year, and any further adjustments that will have to be made, depending on the results of these changes. If you have any suggestions about cutting expenses, we would like to hear from you.
My mother and father (Iola Landry and Francois Denis Gravois) were both "family oriented" people, and I attribute my interest in this wonderful hobby to them! From an early age, I remember my mother recalling little anecdotes about family members. Many, distant cousins whom I hardly knew, sounded so fascinating to me that I longed to meet them someday. (How I wish now I had recorded all that oral history! Fortunately, she told some stories so often that my siblings and I have remembered many of them.)
My Dad was not a big talker, but after he retired from years of teaching, he methodically pursued his new hobby of trying to complete his family tree. He frequented court houses and church rectories, and copied (by hand) copious notes about any names that he thought might be related! He and Mamma got a lot of help from Cousin Bill Lessard from Baton Rouge, and he started to correspond with other relatives who were into genealogy.
After Dad died, my stepmother Adele Lessard gave me the little old-fashioned grip (suitcase) that held all his notes. What a windfall! At that moment when I first started digging through Dad's things, I was hooked! Those church records containing names, dates, and places just lured me in. And as I read about these people, I recalled the little stories Mamma used to tell, and that really helped make the records come alive!
I have never stopped being intrigued by the mysteries of the records still to be found out there. And praise the Lord for inspiring someone to invent the computer! That instrument has really helped me to make connections in a way I never could before. Gloria Hicks
