The July meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 1997, at the North Branch of the Terrebonne Parish Library in Gray.

At our June meeting, Hodges Folse showed us a "snowshoe" for horses that was used by farmers on the Raceland prairie. Not for snow, but for the thick "gumbo" mud that they had when they drained the land. It seemed that quite a few of the settlers came from up North, and they remembered the heavy iron attachments that were clamped to the horse's hooves to make it easier to walk in deep snow. However, when they used it for mud, it was much stickier than snow, so the animal would be held immobile. Hodges said it was easier to put the shoes on the first day; after that the horse resisted too much. A historical note: this device bore the imprint "Patent pending No. 4."

SEMINARS

By the time you get this you have just a little over two weeks to make plans to attend the 21st Annual Seminar on History and Genealogy hosted by the Lafourche Heritage Society on Saturday, August 9, 1997, at the Howard Johnson Lodge, LA Hwy 308 and N. Canal Blvd., Thibodaux, LA. I don't have a phone number, but if you send $20 to P.O.Box 913, Thibodaux, LA 70302-0913, they will hold a place for you. If you wait until the day of the seminar, you won't get lunch included in the registration. So do it NOW.

The Winn Parish Genealogical & Historical Association is presenting a Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, 13 September 1997 in the A. Leonard Allen Building in the center of Winnfield, LA. (At least, it is located on Main St. across from the Winn Parish Courthouse.) Some of the topics are: Native Americans, History of Winn Parish, and a survey of genealogical organizations (D.A.R., V.F.W., S.A.R., etc.).

Jefferson Genealogical Society's 13th Workshop will be held on Saturday, 4 October 1997 at the Holiday Inn Select on Williams Blvd and I-10 in Kenner. The featured speaker will be Desmond Walls Allen, recipient of many prestigious awards in genealogy, and most recently appeared in the PBS television series, Ancestors.

Ms. Allen is keeping busy, these days. She will also speak on "Arkansaw Research" at the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association, Inc.'s Seminar and Book Fair to be held 9 August 1997. The location will be the Ramada Inn, Airport, in Shreveport, Louisiana. The phone number I have for that is (318) 635-7531, but that may be for the Ramada Inn. If you want additional information about the Seminar, call Mrs. Ethel Krause (318)746-3125. If you want lunch, send $25 to Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association, Inc., P. O. Box 4462, Shreveport, LA 71134-0462, or send $15 if you want to provide your own lunch. But hurry, now, hear?

PUBLICATIONS

The latest (1996) Lafourche Comet Births, Engagements & Deaths is priced at $38.00 for the hardbound edition. The corresponding book containing the Houma Courier information is $41.00, and you should order either (or both) from the society before August 15, 1997 and include $3.00 if mailing is necessary.
